Bécsi kapu tér is one of the important centers of the Buda Castle, the streets crossing the Castle Quarter meet here. In the Middle Ages, it was also called Szombathely, Saturday market place and Saturday market, because a market was held in the square every Saturday. According to popular tradition, all kinds of weapons were once hanging on the square, they were thought to be the weapons of Miklós Toldi, but in the 18th century they somehow disappeared. Around 1868, it reached its shape, which is still visible today, and in 1874, it received the name it is still known today. There are several more important buildings on the square, such as the Vienna Gate, the Hungarian National Archives or the Evangelical Church in Buda. The memorial fountain of Ferenc Kazinczy is located in the middle of the square.
